    Start an arrangementAsk a question

    Simple does not mean impersonal

    What is direct cremation?

Direct cremation is a cremation without a traditional funeral ceremony taking place beforehand. It separates the practical cremation arrangements from any memorial, celebration of life or family gathering. This gives families more control over timing, location and cost.

Sometimes described as a cremation-only service or simple cremation, an unattended cremation means mourners are not present at the crematorium. It does not mean the person receives less care. We use a simple coffin, coordinate the required paperwork, provide respectful transport and arrange an individual cremation.

Some families choose direct cremation because they prefer a private memorial later. Others want a low-cost cremation without a procession, hearse, limousines or formal service. Whatever the reason, we will explain the choices clearly and treat every arrangement with dignity.

    Read our low-cost funeral guide

Direct cremation may suit you if:

    • You want a simple, dignified cremation
    • You do not want a formal funeral ceremony
    • You prefer to hold a memorial later
    • You need transparent, affordable funeral arrangements
    • Relatives live in different places and need more time to gather
    Putney Vale Crematorium in London
Putney Vale Crematorium is one of our standard attended-service locations.

    Time together at the crematorium

Attended cremation in London from £1,489

For families who want to be present, our standard attended service provides a calm 30-minute chapel time at Putney Vale or West London Crematorium.

    What your family can do

Up to 50 mourners may gather for the standard service. You may choose music, readings and a short spoken tribute, bring flowers, and ask approved family members to carry the coffin into the crematorium.

This is a meaningful option for people who want a simple cremation while still having time to say goodbye together.

    Choices that may cost more

A 60-minute chapel time, evening or weekend booking, or a different London crematorium will be quoted according to the crematorium’s current fee and availability.

A celebrant or minister, livestreaming, printed orders of service and other optional elements are not included unless specifically agreed.

Ashes: the same return options apply to attended and unattended cremations—free collection, post for £49 or personal delivery for £109.

    Why choose usAbout Capital Cremation

    Serving Greater London

Direct cremation near you in London

If you are searching for direct cremation near me, the most important questions are whether the provider covers the place of death, what the advertised price includes and who will support the family.

Capital Cremation provides cremation services in London and within the M25. Our standard service covers collection from hospitals and coroner’s mortuaries across this area. We can also arrange collection from a private home, hospice or care home for the stated additional charge.

We usually arrange attended services at Putney Vale Crematorium or West London Crematorium. If another London crematorium is important to your family, tell us your preference and we will confirm its current fee, available times and any additional cost.

Looking for cheap cremation or the cheapest direct cremation in the UK?

A headline price is only useful when you know what it includes. A low advertised figure may exclude collection, the crematorium fee, the coffin, return of ashes or charges that become unavoidable later.

    Check every quotation for:

    • The area and place of collection included
    • Crematorium and professional fees
    • The coffin and care of the person who died
    • Paperwork and transport
    • How and when ashes are returned
    • Likely charges for your particular circumstances

    Our approach to affordable funerals

We keep the arrangement simple and publish the relevant additional charges. Our £1,089 standard unattended service includes the essential fees for an eligible hospital or coroner’s mortuary collection within the M25.

We do not promise to be the cheapest provider in every part of the UK. We promise to explain the service and the price before you proceed.

A goodbye in your own way

Hold a memorial after a direct cremation

A direct cremation does not prevent a meaningful farewell. Many families hold a memorial, celebration of life or ash-scattering ceremony after the cremation, when more people can attend and there is time to plan without urgency.

You might gather at home, in a place of worship, at a community venue or somewhere that mattered to the person who died. Music, photographs, readings and shared memories can make the occasion personal without the restrictions of a crematorium timetable.

    Plan a memorial service

    Ashes return options

Ashes are normally available from the same day to within 24 hours after cremation, subject to the crematorium’s operations.

    • Collection from the agreed location: free
    • Post: £49
    • Personal delivery: £109

    Answers before you decide

    Direct cremation questions

If your circumstances are different from those described here, call us for a personal, itemised quotation.

    What is direct cremation?

Direct cremation is a cremation without a traditional funeral ceremony beforehand. With an unattended direct cremation, mourners do not go to the crematorium; families may hold a memorial or celebration of life separately.

How much does direct cremation cost in London?

Our standard unattended direct cremation costs £1,089. This is the complete price for the essential services listed on this page when collection is from a hospital or coroner’s mortuary within the M25.

What is included in the £1,089 price?

It includes eligible hospital or coroner’s mortuary collection within the M25, professional care, required arrangements and paperwork, a simple coffin, transport, the standard crematorium fee, individual cremation, a simple ashes container and free collection of the ashes from the agreed location.

    Can there be additional charges?

Yes, but only when a relevant service or item is needed. Home, hospice or care-home collection is £289; out-of-hours collection is £289; required pacemaker or hazardous implant removal is £189; and an oversized coffin is £189. A chosen crematorium, date or time may also change the price.

    Can family and friends attend?

Yes. Our attended cremation starts from £1,489 and normally provides a 30-minute morning chapel service at Putney Vale or West London Crematorium for up to 50 mourners. Music, readings, a short tribute and flowers are permitted within the crematorium’s rules.

Can we choose the crematorium, date or time?

You may request a particular London crematorium, date or time. Crematoria have different fees and availability, so we will confirm any extra cost before you proceed. Evening, weekend and longer services normally cost more.

How and when are the ashes returned?

Ashes are normally available from the same day to within 24 hours after cremation, subject to crematorium operations. Collection from the agreed location is free, post costs £49 and personal delivery costs £109.

What happens if someone dies at home, in a hospice or care home?

Contact the appropriate medical professional or emergency service first. Once the necessary attendance has taken place, call us. Collection from a home, hospice or care home costs an additional £289; an out-of-hours collection charge may also apply.

What paperwork is needed for cremation?

The exact process depends on the circumstances of the death and whether a coroner is involved. The statutory Medical Examiner process now forms part of death certification in England and Wales. We coordinate the cremation paperwork and explain what the family needs to do.

Is help available 24 hours a day?

Our normal office hours are Monday to Friday, 08:00–19:00. Urgent telephone assistance is available 24/7 on 020 7100 6074.

Do you offer prepaid funeral plans?

Capital Cremation does not currently sell or introduce prepaid funeral plans. If you consider a plan elsewhere, check that the provider or intermediary has the appropriate Financial Conduct Authority authorisation.

Is the cheapest advertised cremation always the lowest final price?

No. Compare what is included, the collection area, crematorium fee, coffin, ashes return and likely extras. We publish a complete £1,089 standard price for eligible London arrangements and explain any additional cost before payment.

    Is payment required in advance?

Yes. Payment is required upfront after the arrangement, service details and total cost have been explained and agreed.

    Simple, Affordable and Dignified Cremations

Direct cremation is the simplest and most affordable option for families who want to avoid any additional costs. It offers a dignified way to honour the life of your loved one by providing them with an alternative to traditional funerals or burials.

    Better Farewells with Capital Cremation

    How it works

Direct cremation provides a modern, environmentally friendly alternative to a traditional cremation service. The cremation takes place in a separate location than from the ceremony. Although some people choose to attend the funeral, others prefer not to do so. For these people, a green burial may be the perfect alternative solution.

    What is Direct Cremation?

If you choose a direct cremation, we will work with the hospital in order to get the necessary forms and certificates completed, so that you and your loved ones can spend more time together. It is usually possible to view/see the deceased person at the hospital, during this time.

When the cremation is going to take place, our staff will transport the body directly to a crematorium. By doing so, you are guaranteed fast and low cost cremation services.

Most people choosing low cost cremations, do not attend /are not able to attend the cremation of their loved one. Because families don’t want to regret not attending the cremation, in the future, they are forced to opt for more expensive funeral packages.

We, however, welcome family and friends to take part in/attend the cremation ceremony. You are able to choose which crematorium you would like to use, and decide whether you are having a religious ceremony or a less formal farewell.

Some of the advantages of choosing our low-cost cremation service

    Less Formal

You can have a small get-together with close friends and relatives, say some words in a natural, friendly way and then play up to three songs of your choice.

Service can be Attended or Unattended

The term 'direct cremation' originally referred to the process of taking a body directly from the hospital to the crematorium. It is less expensive than traditional funerals and is becoming increasingly popular. Unlike other cremation providers, we are able to provide/offer memorial services that can be attended.

    Lower Costs

Unfortunately most cremations in the UK now cost over £3,500. We, however, are able to provide a fast/efficient, friendly and simple service for a much lower cost.
